FAQS



Q:  What are the admission criteria?
A:  Eligibility for admission to the Delaware Veterans Home is comprised of four main components:

  1. Service component - Honorably discharged from active service (peacetime or wartime) or any National Guardsman or Reservist who is eligible for retirement pay at age 60 or has served on active duty for at least 180 days (does not have to be consecutive).
  2. Residency component - The Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs has established that an applicant must have resided in the state for a period of 3 or more years just prior to the date of application for admission to the Home.
  3. Level of Care component - The veteran has medical needs requiring nursing care.
  4. Financial Component - Veterans will be expected to pay a portion of their health care.

Q:  How can you request admission?
A:  All inquires are encouraged. Please contact the Delaware Veterans Home at 302-424-6000, or the Commission of Veterans Affairs at either 1-800-344-9900 (in state only) or 302-739-2792.

Q:  Do I have to pay to stay at the Delaware Veterans Home?

Q:  What is included in the rooms?
A:  There are private and semi-private rooms. The semi-private rooms have a common entrance and bath with living spaces separated by a wall. Each room contains a bed, overbed table, night stand, closet, desk and desk chair. Added amenities in each room include a cable TV, and phone. To the extent permitted, veterans are encouraged to personalize their rooms to help create a more 'homelike' atmosphere.

Q:  How many veterans can be cared for?
A:  The Delaware Veterans Home has 150 beds. Ninety beds are utilized for nursing care (intermediate or skilled). 30 beds are designated for Special Care.

Q:  What is a Special Care Unit?
A:  The Special Care Unit offers services and a specialized environment to care for the cognitively impaired individual. Veterans who may be diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease are eligible.

Q:  How do I get a copy of my DD-214?
A:  You can contact the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs at 1-800-344-9900 (in state only) or 1-302-739-2792. You can also obtain a copy of your DD-214 from the federal government at www.vetrecs.archives.gov (some National Guardsmen may not be able to utilize this site).

Q:  How do I get to the Delaware Veterans Home?
A:  Driving Directions (refer to below map):
From the North (including Wilmington and Newark):

  1. Take Route 1/113 South toward Milford
  2. Bear Right to continue on Route 113 at the split of Route 1/113
  3. At the 4th traffic light (4/5 of a mile), turn right onto Airport Road
  4. Proceed approximately 1.2 miles
  5. Turn right onto Delaware Veterans Drive and proceed approximately 300 feet.
From the South (including Georgetown and Selbyville):
  1. Take Route 113 North to Milford
  2. Cross Route 14 and proceed to second traffic light, Airport Road
  3. Turn left onto Airport Road
  4. Proceed approximately 1.2 miles
  5. Turn right onto Delaware Veterans Drive and proceed approximately 300 feet.
From the East (Including Lewes):
  1. Take Route 1 North towards Milford
  2. Turn left onto NE 10th Street & proceed approximately 7/10 of a mile.
  3. Continue across Route 113. NE 10th Street becomes Airport Road
  4. Proceed approximately 1.2 miles
  5. Turn right onto Delaware Veterans Drive and proceed approximately 300 feet.
From the West (from Harrington):
  1. Take Route 14 East from Harrington for approximately 7 miles
  2. Turn sharp left at traffic light onto Canterbury Road/Route 15
  3. Go approximately 3/10 of a mile
  4. Turn right onto Airport Road
  5. Proceed 100 yards and Delaware Veterans Home will be on the left
  6. Turn left onto Delaware Veterans Drive and proceed approximately 300 feet.

Q:  When can my family visit?
A:  The Delaware Veterans Home does not have set visiting hours and family members are encouraged to visit with residents of the home at times that are convenient to the resident. The main entrance to the home is open from 7 AM to 9 PM everyday. Staff members are on hand at the main entrance during these times to welcome you. For all other times, please contact the nurse manager on duty at 302-424-8500 for access.

Q:  Can I dine with my family members/visitors?
A:  Absolutely! In addition to the Dining Room, there will be a Canteen offering a wide selection of hot and cold foods, snacks, and refreshments at a reasonable cost.

Q:  What type of recreational activities are available?
A:   Every veteran is encouraged to participate in as many activities and programs as possible. Some examples may include exercise, fitness, group activities, crafts, entertainment and "outside" activities. There will be a Chapel and Library with audiotapes and computer access.

A:   Monetary donations can be made to the "Delaware Veterans Home Fund" and/or the "Friends of the Delaware Veterans Home" and should be sent to the following address: Commission of Veterans Affairs, 802 Silver Lake Blvd., Suite 100, Dover, DE 19904.
