The public is invited to a special Flag Day event at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford to celebrate and honor our veterans and the flag by which they have stood in defense of our country.  The literary angle of the event, which will be held on Saturday, June 14 from 2-4 p.m., will allow residents of the Home, their families, and members of the community to meet and hear from Delaware authors who are themselves veterans, as well as to purchase books from those authors.   The event is being organized by the Delaware Veterans Home, the Office of the Secretary of State, and the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. William Carter, a Millsboro resident and author of Why Me, Lord? , is one of the featured participants.  Dr. Carter's book is a firsthand account of one of the most tragic chapters in World War II naval history, the infamous PQ 17 convoy across the North Atlantic to north Russia in the summer of 1942.  Another participating author is John Kroening, a resident of the Delaware Veterans Home, who has recently published a photo essay on becoming one of the youngest combat pilots in World War II.

In addition to the authors, three members of the group known as the "Normandy Nightingales" will be present to discuss their experiences taking care of wounded soldiers after the 1944 D-Day invasion.  Throughout the afternoon, v isitors will have the opportunity to speak with the featured guests and tour the public areas of the year-old Delaware Veterans Home to experience its lively and welcoming atmosphere.

At the conclusion of the program, a flag folding ceremony will be performed by Smyrna AMVETS Post 4.  The public is also encouraged to bring any worn or tattered American flags to the event for proper retirement.
