Members of the media are invited to attend a Flag Day event at the Delaware Veterans Home which will allow residents of the Home, their families, and members of the community to meet and hear from Delaware authors who are themselves veterans. In addition, the Home is honored to welcome three distinguished army nurses who were part of the group know as the "Normandy Nightingales."
Dr. William Carter, a Millsboro resident and author of Why Me, Lord? , is one of the day's featured authors. Dr. Carter's book is a firsthand account of one of the most tragic chapters in World War II naval history, the infamous PQ 17 convoy across the North Atlantic to north Russia in the summer of 1942. Another featured author is John Kroening, a resident of the Delaware Veterans Home, who has recently published a photo essay on becoming one of the youngest combat pilots in World War II. Also participating will be Joseph Dulany, a Dover resident and former Army chaplain, who has written three books on various topics, including his military service. The fourth author is Seaford resident Franklin Horsman, Sr., who is a veteran of the Navy and Coast Guard. All of the authors will have their books available for purchase.
In addition to the authors, "Normandy Nightingales" Mae "Monti" Bowen, Dorothy Lewis, and Grace McDonnell will be present to discuss their experiences taking care of wounded soldiers after the 1944 D-Day invasion. Throughout the afternoon, v isitors will have the opportunity to speak with the featured guests and tour the public areas of the year-old Delaware Veterans Home to experience its lively and welcoming atmosphere.
As part of the afternoon's entertainment, a select group of the award-winning "Delaware Diamonds" Library Book Cart Drill Team-consisting of library staff from Delaware 's public and academic libraries-will be performing ( weather permitting ).
At the conclusion of the program, a flag folding ceremony will be performed by Smyrna AMVETS Post 4. The public is also encouraged to bring any worn or tattered American flags to the event for proper retirement.
