At a small ceremony yesterday, Delaware's Secretary of State Harriet Smith Windsor accepted a $20,000 check on behalf of the Delaware Veterans Home (DVH) from Milford's American Legion Post #3 and Auxiliary Unit #3.
The $20,000 amount was part of excess funds collected when the Post and Auxiliary Unit were fundraising to pay for the Iraq/Afghanistan War Memorial in Milford. The memorial, which was unveiled earlier this year in Bicentennial Park, served as the backdrop for yesterday's ceremony.
"The patriotism shown in our communities, never forgetting the heroes who give their lives that we may have freedom, is what makes America great and makes me so proud to be an American," said Secretary Windsor, whose department oversees the operation of DVH.
The donation will be used by the Friends of the Delaware Veterans Home for the purchase of materials and equipment that will enrich the lives of current and future residents of DVH.
The Delaware Veterans Home was dedicated on December 7, 2006 and opened to residents in June of this year. Its mission is to provide outstanding long-term care services to Delaware Veterans that uphold dignity and respect while sustaining and improving their quality of life.
